Getting it running
Copy the link, and treat it as a password
It is in your activation message, shaped http://server:port/get.php with your username and password attached as parameters. That means the link itself contains your credentials in plain sight — anyone holding it holds your subscription. Do not post it in a forum asking why something does not work.
Paste it into the player
VLC wants Media, then Open Network Stream. Smart IPTV takes it at siptv.app/mylist. Kodi needs the IPTV Simple Client and its M3U URL field. TiViMate and Smarters accept one under M3U playlist, though the Xtream login serves you considerably better in those two.
Add the guide if the player asks
Some players want programme data supplied separately. It is the same server address ending xmltv.php with your credentials attached, and support will send it across on request. Where a player pulls the guide automatically, you are on the Xtream route and need none of this.
Keep it out of anywhere public
Because your username and password sit inside the link itself, posting it in a forum, a support thread or a screenshot hands over your subscription to whoever reads it. This happens more often than you would think, usually from somebody asking why a channel will not play. Describe the problem instead and send the link only to support.
Use it for the job it is best at
Opening the M3U in VLC on a laptop is the fastest way in existence to answer one narrow question: is this channel actually present and does it play? No installation, no configuration, thirty seconds. Before spending an evening on the television, spend thirty seconds here.
Then move to a proper player on the screen you watch
VLC has no guide, no favourites and no memory of where you were, so it is an instrument rather than somewhere to spend an evening. Once the link has told you what you wanted to know, set up Smarters or TiViMate on the television and run the fortnight there, with every existing subscription still going.
When something misbehaves
The list loads very slowly
There are thousands of entries in that file and simpler players parse every one before displaying anything. Either move to a player that handles categories, such as TiViMate or Smarters, or ask support for an M3U filtered down to your own country, which cuts the file dramatically.
Some channels play and others do not
In VLC specifically this is usually a codec the default engine will not handle rather than a dead channel. Try the same channel in Smarters before reporting it — a stream that plays in one player and not another is telling you about the player.
The link stopped working after a renewal
Occasionally a renewal issues a fresh link. Ask support for the current one; the Xtream credentials generally survive unchanged, which is another small argument for using them where a player allows it.
Kodi shows the channels but no guide
IPTV Simple Client needs the XMLTV address entered separately under its EPG settings. Request it from support. Kodi will not derive it from the playlist, and nothing in the interface hints that it wants a second address.
VLC plays it but there are no channel names
Some very old players ignore the metadata in the file and show raw stream addresses instead. Nothing is wrong with the playlist. Use a player that understands the format — Smarters, TiViMate or a current VLC — rather than trying to fix a file that is already correct.

What people ask about the M3U playlist
Why do free M3U lists from code-sharing sites stop working?
Because they are scraped streams republished for anyone to take, so thousands of people hit one source at once. The host blocks them or simply falls over, usually within days. There is nobody to contact when it breaks, and the sites distributing them are a documented malware route. A paid playlist is tied to your account alone, which is the whole difference.
M3U or Xtream, which should I use?
Xtream wherever the player offers it, because the guide and on-demand sections come with it automatically. M3U where the player only speaks playlists — VLC, Kodi, Smart IPTV — and for the thirty-second check of whether a channel is present at all.
Can I share the link with family?
Inside your household that is what it is for. Outside it, you are handing over your subscription, and the simultaneous-screen limit will make that obvious quite quickly. Accounts found published are closed without refund, which is in the terms and is enforced.
Does the M3U include the on-demand catalogue?
Partly, and less tidily. Films and box sets appear as enormous flat groups rather than the browsable library the Xtream login produces. If the catalogue matters to you — and it should, since that is the part overlapping what you already pay for — use a player that speaks Xtream.
Will the M3U work in Kodi?
Through the IPTV Simple Client add-on, yes, with the playlist address in its M3U field and the guide address entered separately. Kodi is powerful and fiddly in equal measure. If you are not already a Kodi household, Smarters will get you watching considerably faster and with fewer moving parts.
Does using the M3U count differently against my screens?
No. A stream is a stream regardless of how the player found it, so a laptop playing through VLC occupies a screen exactly as a television does. This catches people out during testing: checking a channel on a laptop while somebody watches in the lounge can hit the limit on a single-screen plan.
Can I open the file to see what is in it?
You can — it is plain text, and opening it in a text editor shows every channel name paired with an address. Doing so is the quickest way to check whether a specific channel exists at all, without waiting for a player to load thousands of entries. Search the file for the name you care about; if it is not there, no amount of configuration will produce it.
Does the playlist change without me doing anything?
The link stays the same and its contents are refreshed at our end as channels move, which is why players that reload from the link stay current while a saved copy drifts. If a player of yours has been showing the same dead channel for weeks, it is almost certainly holding a stored copy rather than re-reading the link.
